Serata culturale with Dr. Rossella Merlino

Today we invite you to a "Gourmet Talk" with Dr. Rossella Merlino , mafia researcher. She has taught Italian Studies and Italian at Bangor University in Wales since 2015. Her research interest lies in the cultural dimension of organized crime by the Mafia. Dr. Merlino specializes in the Sicilian mafia and explores the role of cultural codes in communication at an identarian and structural level. From 2018 to 2021 she completed a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship at the University of Messina with a research project on the history and functioning of the mafia in the province of Messina.

Once a month, we at «horizonte» would like to give six students (up to the age of 35) the opportunity to get to know an exciting personality from society, business, politics and diplomacy over a three-course meal. 

We believe that people can converse over food and drink in a more informal way than when they meet at a seminar or lecture. In such a comparatively informal setting, more interesting conversations can be held, more exciting perspectives can be opened up and deeper insights can be gained. At the same time, we want to create an opportunity to look into the life and wealth of experience of outstanding personalities and to learn from them. Through dialogue, the mutual exchange of experiences and the transfer of knowledge at eye level, participants should be encouraged to actively participate in solving social problems. Because we at horizonte are convinced that  «No problem of human destiny is beyond human beings. Man's reason and spirit have often solved the seemingly unsolvable — and we believe they can do it again» , as John F. Kennedy once put it in a nutshell.

Our event takes place in the Casa Tolone restaurant, where you can immerse yourself in conversations about all kinds of Italian delicacies and get to know a personality in a refreshingly different way.

With a small cost contribution of CHF 35 for food and drink, you can be part of such an exciting evening. Please let us know if you have any special diets. Apéro, wine and drinks are included.
